The open area covered by grass and pohutukawa at the end of the Point (now a reserve) shows archaeological traces of the original pa fortification and settlement. This part of the reserve is now overshadowed by the huge overhead structure of the Harbour Bridge’s northern anchorage. The lack of general protection for the site has been of concern, and in 1999 the Northcote Residents Association raised the issue of the area’s general neglect. In 2001 maintenance water-blasting on the bridge caused a slip on the eastern side of the reserve and this too was criticised by local iwi and Northcote community representatives. These concerns have yet to be resolved, but it is hoped that the site will receive heritage protection.
