New Zealand at War - Part 1

<< Back Next >>

New Zealand joined the First World War in 1914 and our troops fought in all major battles overseas. Some stand out however, such as Gallipoli, where the ANZACs ( Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) distinguished themselves through bravery and perseverance. Many of those who fought and survived this bitter defeat went on to serve on the Western Front particularly in Flanders and at the second Battle for the Somme . The Maori Pioneer Battalion fought for the first time as a unit while our nurses served in aid stations on the battlefields and in military hospitals largely in Egypt , England and France . Follow the New Zealanders through the war from 1914 to 1918 with the following audio-visual display. Press play on each page to hear the memories of North Shore soldiers.
