Local History

Each North Shore Library holds a collection of material that documents the area's local history. Takapuna library also holds items of national heritage in its New Zealand Collection on the 2nd floor. You do not need to be a member of North Shore Libraries to view these collections.

We also maintain a number of local history indexes. You do not need to be a member of North Shore Libraries to view or access them.

Local History Online

Local History Online is an index to major articles from the suburban newspapers of the North Shore and West Auckland. Newspapers indexed include the North Shore Times, The Devonport Flagstaff, The Aucklander (North and West editions) and the Western Leader. Also included in this database is an index to a series of scrapbooks held at Devonport Library, which contain information about Devonport prior to its amalgamation with other North Shore local authorities in 1989. From mid-2008 Local History Online will include the oral history and digital image collections of North Shore and Waitakere Libraries.

North Shore Libraries' Image Collections

All branches of North Shore Libraries maintain collections of historical images of the North Shore. From mid-2008 these images will be available to search and view on Local History Online. Until then each library's collection can be viewed by appointment at the branch located in the area of interest.

North Shore Oral History Index

North Shore Libraries hold over 200 taped oral histories of North Shore residents. To listen to any of these recordings, contact North Shore Libraries' New Zealand Collection and make an appointment. The tapes are not available for copying or for loan. From mid-2008 Local History Online will include an index to the Oral History collections of North Shore and Waitakere Libraries.

Below are glimpses of the North Shore from our digital collection delivered through the 'Capturing our Past' project.

Capturing our Past

Mon Desir

This presentation is a fictional extract of the diary of a staff member at the Mon Desir Hotel on the corner of The Promenade and Hurstmere Road during the 1930’s. It is based on information given by Babs Bass who worked at the hotel during that era and extracts from her recording for the North Shore Oral History Project have been included in the presentation. Some pages have audio, click on the play button below the image to hear her voice. Enter The Mon Desir

Auckland Harbour Bridge

This presentation tells the story of the building and continuing history of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in celebration of forty five years of operation on the 30th May 2004. Over that time the Bridge has impacted in some way on the lives of every Aucklander. This production contains images of the Bridge's history and the memories and comments of people for whom the huge structure holds a special significance. Press play on the audio player at each slide to hear sound clips from people talking about their involvement in the building of the Bridge. Visit the Auckland Harbour Bridge

New Zealand at War - Part 1 - The Great War 1914-1918

New Zealand joined the First World War in 1914 and our troops fought in all major battles overseas. Some stand out however, such as Gallipoli, where the ANZACs (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) distinguished themselves through bravery and perseverance. Learn about New Zealands involvement in the Great War

As funding becomes available, more presentations will be added to this collection. Please contact the North Shore Libraries Foundation if you would like to donate towards the project.
