Recent North Shore writers
Our North Shore has a rich literary history with many poets and novelists living here with us. In the 1950s Frank Sargeson in his cottage on Esmonde Rd (now preserved as the Frank Sargeson Trust) was a mentor and friend to many a young and aspiring writer. Janet Frame was one who flourished under his kind mentoring. Kevin Ireland says that Frank made him realise that it was possible to treat writing as his life's work and to earn a living by writing. Nowadays poets Michelle Leggot, Jack Ross and Stu Bagby live locally as well as our contemporary novelists such as Terri Kessel.
