Sullivan McLeod grew up in Margaret River, Western Australia, and has always surfed. Having completed the obligatory OE, he decides to enter the surfing World Championships, just to see if he could compete against some of his idols. He starts off with good intentions, but is frequently waylaid by women, drinking and partying. Amazingly he scores fairly well in the heats, but the charm of this book is not so much the surfie tales, but the disasters and adventures that befall him as he makes his way around the world from heat to heat. It is a combination of travelogue, autobiography and adventure story, and a pleasure to read.
