Written as a catalogue for the exhibition held at Gus Fisher Gallery in Auckland, and the National Portrait Gallery in Wellington in 2008/2009, this book observes a wide scope of leadership within New Zealand, from Queen Victoria to Sir Edmund Hillary. This beautifully illustrated catalogue displays all of the paintings exhibited, with detailed accounts written on the history of each individual painting and the various acknowledged leaders. As a visual history of New Zealand leadership, this book and exhibition was researched, written and curated by Dr Erin Griffey, an Art Historian at the University of Auckland, with contributions by Brad Jackson from the University of Auckland Business School. Dr Griffey has since curated other exhibitions with a close focus on New Zealand portraits, celebrating iconic Maori and Pakeha leaders from the eighteenth century to the present. This book is a fantastic look at portraiture for those who love and study art and Art History, while it is also a great read for those who take general interest in the history of New Zealand and its leadership represented through portraiture.
