No one knows much about William Shakespeare apart from the fact he was a great playwright. Even his official portrait may be of another person! Not many records remain of Shakespeare and many are believed to have been lost in the Great Fire of London in 1666. His plays are so diverse – comedy, tragedy, absurdity, great love, hatred and passion – that his own character is difficult to define. Bryson’s style makes this book an easy read. It is a good insight into life in the Middle Ages, together with a few possibilities as to who the genius we know as Shakespeare could actually be.
