Some books are so good that you don't want to put them down, some are so good that you stop reading every so often so that you can think about what you have just read. This is one of the latter. At the funeral of an old friend, Alistair realises how empty his local church was. He and a few friends start a Bible Study group and choose to live as close to the teaching and practice of Jesus as possible. This book is set in early 20th Century Canada; the characters face pressure to conform to the worldly notion of getting ahead, looking out for oneself and building up assets. They choose instead to live simply, some of them becoming itinerant preachers, others building a fellowship where they remain. They discuss issues as they arise, always consulting their Bibles for examples to follow. I especially found George's answer to the age-old question Why does a loving God send some people to hell? very satisfying.
