The story is set in the fifties in Britain and tells of the lives of the middle classes as they hang on to a way of life that they have known and which disappeared with the onset of the Second World War. The author recreates the repressive social mores and highlights the plight of those who rebel or feel differently. The undercurrents of fear and rage are subtle and menacing, building to a violent climax. I liked it for the well drawn characters and evocation of an England that is past.
