If you’re in the mood for a truly delightful read then The Earth Hums in B Flat, the debut novel by Mari Strachan is the book for you.
Set in a small Welsh town in the 1950s the story centres around the inquisitive and slightly ‘odd’ 12 year old Gwenni Morgan and her quest to solve the mystery of a crime committed in the community.
Her growing understanding and compassion for those around her as secrets are unearthed and dissected is beautifully described, you’ll laugh and you’ll cry.
Her ability to fly in her sleep, her portrayal of the characters, the Toby jugs that live on the mantelpiece and seem to have a life of their own, all add to the charm, quirkiness and warmth of this story. I couldn’t put this down and didn’t want it to end. Highly recommended.
