This is Sadie Jones’ second novel and focuses again on the fifties, but this time the story is set on the island of Cyprus during the Emergency, a time of unrest between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots who are both fighting against the Colonial forces of Britain. It is a story of idealism gradually eroded by the things that are seen and done during the occupation, especially as the riots and deaths escalate .It is also a story of endurance and courage in the lives of ordinary people. Again I liked the way the author draws her characters and recreates the atmosphere of that time.
