Among other things, the author is Professor for the theory and practice of medicine at Stanford University as well as an excellent writer. This story is about an unusual child, in an unusual setting who lives through unusual circumstances and one book I just couldn't put down. Set in Addis Ababa and later, the United States, it begins with the birth of identical twins in the 1950s and follows their incredible lives in medicine.  Full of wonderful characters, it is a remarkable story which captures the time and place superbly. To describe it as a saga perhaps doesn't do it justice, but it is essentially just that. A brilliant read.

Thank you for a great review AH. I too was gripped by this rich, warm, epic story from beginning to end. There have been mixed reviews on this title, with particular comment on the excess of medical information. I found the medical detail absolutely fascinating and combined with superb characterisation became an unforgettable read for me and certainly one that I will return to.
