History graduates Mike, Eileen and Polly time-travel back to England in WWII to make first-hand observations of civilian behaviour. It is not as straightforward as they might hope and, after several weeks, they find that their 'drops' won’t open and they can not regain their own time. Blackout has a bit of a slow start, but the background is necessary as it offers clues to why they are trapped and how they are to survive in situations that they haven't studied. They like the 'contemps 'who don't know what is to happen next, with the added stress of believing that their actions might change history.
