John le Carre turns his storytelling talents to the ‘War on Terror.’ Set in Hamburg, the story tells of a half-starved young Russian man claiming to be a devout Muslim, an idealistic young German civil rights lawyer, and a sixty-year-old banker, who form an unlikely alliance to get the young Muslim’s inheritance of “black” funds channelled into good causes. But, as normal with Le Carre’s works, nothing is ever straightforward and there are others watching who have agendas of their own against terrorists, supposed or real. The gripping part of this story is that the reader is never sure who is the real terrorist, and the reality of that remains after the conclusion. The story to me was not as compelling as “The Constant Gardener “ or “The Mission Song” but certainly a worthwhile read.
