After being in self-imposed exile for three years, the Dixie Chicks make a comeback with their international hit album “Taking the Long Way”. In contrast to their past three albums which made them the best selling female group in America – where the girls mostly sang about break-ups and cowboys – their new style is more mature, powerful and autobiographical. They no longer play solely country music, but create a crossover between country and rock. Every song on this album was co-written by the three girls and was inspired by their life events, and it is clear that every lyric was laboured over. Many of their songs deal with free speech, political intolerance, and their own reactions to the controversy that these have evoked. Other tracks touch on more personal issues: the joys and sorrows of infertility, motherhood and marriage. Most importantly, this album is an odyssey for three women who bravely stood their guard and fought for the right of free speech in America.
