This non-fiction story is a very sad but fascinating account of a way of life that very few of us know anything about. It is set in the late 1970s and 1980s in England and describes the hardship of a boy who grows up in a Gypsy family. Gradually he comes to accept that he is different from other boys and eventually, when he tries to escape, he realises that he is gay. This book gives us an understanding into the world of Gypsies in the late 20th century – their culture, beliefs, rules and behaviour. It is still relevant today as a recent TV documentary on Gypsy weddings showed that they are still very much a closed community.
