Preschool
All North Shore Libraries run preschool Rhymetime
and Storytime
sessions - check
our timetable - come along and join in, we'd love to see you!
Preschool sessions are designed for babies and children 5 years
and under accompanied by a parent or care giver. These sessions comprise of
Rhymetime and Storytime programmes and are FREE.
During Rhymetime sessions children will share a special fun-time involving
finger rhymes, singing and music and movement. This bonding time provides opportunities
for children to develop confidence and build self esteem by being active participants
in the programme and interacting with their peers. Children find it easier to
remember rhymes and songs than stories. Rhythm helps them hear the sounds that
make up words and can help a child overcome reading problems.
Storytime involves a fun way to share books with children.
This allows children an opportunity to learn through listening to language while
nurturing a love of books. Reading stories to children is a chance to relax
and connect with your child. A time to develop close times for learning and
sharing that encourages verbal communication skills and models the joys of reading.
Story-time in Mandarin
Northcote library holds a Mandarin story-time session. This session is FREE
and suitable for preschool children and their caregivers. Our Chinese librarian
will read stories in mandarin and teach your child simple numbers and how
to count using songs. This provides a valuable opportunity for children to
hear spoken mandarin. Sometimes there may be activities for the children to
do.
Pre-School collections
A Toddler collection has been developed to provide picture and information
books to encourage and support visual and print literacy and enjoyment of
books for ages 0-3 years. These are durable books with simple themes and basic
language and are excellent first books for the children.
The picture book collection provides fiction for children ages 3years
and on. This collection encourages an enjoyment of reading and visual and
print literacy for children. It provides a range of material allowing children
to experience concepts, ideas and cultures that extend their own experiences.
The puzzle collection fosters learning, creativity, hand-eye coordination
and spatial relationships and stimulates initial cognitive abilities. The
collection provides material from toddler to age 7.
The video / DVD collection supports children's information needs with
visual material helping children to interpret and understand their world by
supporting the acquisition of language and reading. In conjunction, the audio
collection for preschool children provides a wide range of interactive non-book
material that supports their recreational and educational needs.
