In 1841 Te Onewa was sold to the newly established Auckland-based Government as part of a much larger land transaction known as the Mahurangi Purchase. This involved a number of iwi, and the protracted negotiations took place between 1841 and 1854. In 1841, the whole of the Waitemata Harbour was surveyed, and on that map Te Onewa is called Point Rough after the first harbour-master Captain David Rough. In 1848 the name was changed again by Captain J.L. Stokes of the H.M. Acheron, who renamed it Stokes Point during a survey of the Waitemata done between 1848 and 1851.
