Matariki Maori New Year celebrations will begin on Monday 14 June and will continue through to 14 July. Auckland wide Matariki celebrations will feature a raft of North Shore events.

Matariki is the name for the Pleiades star cluster in the Taurus constellation. In New Zealand it comes into view low on the north-eastern horizon, appearing in the tail of the Milky Way in the last days of May or in early June, just before dawn. This heralds the beginning of the Maori New Year.

Matariki signals the end of one year in Aotearoa and the beginning of the next cycle of life and is a time to prepare the land for planting in the spring.

Matariki is a special time for all New Zealanders to share, a time to come together and celebrate our unique Maori heritage, nature, creativity and expression.
