The New Zealand Collection housed at
Takapuna Library provides in-depth coverage of the history of the North Shore. All the libraries hold material documenting the history of their own suburb. These local history collections include books, newspaper clippings files and photographs. They may also include audiovisual material, collections of family and community organisation records, old newspapers, newsletters and other ephemera. You do not need to be a member of North Shore Libraries to view any of these collections.
The
New Zealand Collection also has microfilm copies of the North Shore Times Advertiser back to the 1960s and some archive copies of other old North Shore newspapers. These are available for viewing in the New Zealand Collection, upstairs at
Takapuna Library.
Local History Online
In 2006, North Shore Libraries, Waitakere Libraries and Rodney Libraries joined together to make their local history photographs and their newspaper, oral history and community archive indexes available to the public on Local History Online. From this website you can look at and request copies of North Shore heritage photographs, search the online index to the North Shore Times, Aucklander and Devonport Flagstaff newspapers published since 1992, and find out about the
oral history and community archive collections.
