Te Herenga Taiao : The Learning Centre

In pre-Pakeha times Māori often kept their waka off shore riding at anchor so it could be put to sea quickly. Waka were fastened by a rope or painter to a herenga (mooring post) which allowed the canoe to move naturally with the tides and current.

Te Herenga TaiaoLiterally Te Herenga Taiao refers to a mooring post where a waka (or learner) can be hooked into a secure place and have the ability to be instantly connected to the taiao or whole world.

Symbolically, Te Herenga Taiao can describe the digital learning centre at both Glenfield Library and Albany Village Library. A place where electronic information is made accessible to all. In this sense Te Herenga Taiao can be imagined as a dynamic gathering place for many different kinds of cyber-waka all linked together at their local library by a global plug-in point.
