Birkenhead Local History

The Birkenhead Local History collection contains a variety of materials about Birkenhead, including:

  • Photographs of Birkenhead dating back to as early as 1903. Includes photographs of People, Places and Events. Collection indexed on card index. Professional copies can be arranged or photocopies can be taken. Professional copies start at $7.50.
  • Vertical File of clippings from early newspapers including the North Shore Times Advertiser and New Zealand Herald. Card Catalogued. Topics include:
    • Birkenhead Licensing Trust.
    • Birkenhead Primary School.
    • Birkenhead Centennial.
    • History of Local Clubs and Societies.
  • Audio Visual Material

Chelsea Archives

The Chelsea Archives are a collection of records from the Chelsea sugar factory refinery (Now NZ Sugar Ltd) dating back to the late 19th century. The Chelsea Sugar Company used to be one of the largest companies in the southern hemisphere during its prime. More information on the Chelsea Archives.

Oral Histories

This collection contains Oral histories of local identities and their lives in the early 20th century. Some original transcripts and bound copies available. While most of the collection is intershelved with the rest of the Non-Fiction, some are also in the local history collection.
